It's arrived! My new magnolia design, enamelled by hand in deepest royal blue and fuchsia pink. I do so hope you like it as I'm super happy with how this beautiful compact mirror has turned out!
Each coloured enamel is individually applied and hand-polished, so there's always a nerve-wracking wait for my compacts to arrive. Enamelling is such a complex process that it's a real problem if I've chosen the wrong colours. Everything has to be remade, by hand, from scratch! But phew, I think I've got it right on this one. The royal blue was inspired by some of my favourite vintage compacts. It looks stunning in this new enamel.
Here you can see my working sketches for the design, which you might remember I shared back in October. Drawing them brought a shock of happy pink into my studio on some rainy autumn days!
In Japan, pink magnolia flowers traditionally mean 'joy', and are given as gifts to welcome a new baby. Can you imagine a more glamorous gift for a baby shower or new mum?! I found my inspiration for the design in Japanese woodblock prints of magnolias. This by artist Ohara Koson was a real favourite.
Magnolias are also a very popular flower with brides and bridesmaids. I found some extraordinarily beautiful wedding bouquets during my research for the design. This is a gorgeous pinterest board of magnolia bouquets for brides. My favourite must be this by Chicago photographer Laura Balingit.
You can now find my Magnolia compact mirror on Amazon in Europe, and here on my website. The design will be available via Amazon USA by mid Spring. Fingers crossed that you'll like this compact mirror just as much as I love the flower!
